BYD has enhanced the high-voltage battery warranty across its electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) range, extending coverage to eight years or 250,000 kilometres (155,350 miles), whichever comes first. The move is intended to provide added reassurance and boosting confidence for both private and business customers, particularly those with higher annual mileages.

While BYD’s battery warranty remains set at eight years and is still linked to a minimum 70% state of health, the key update is the mileage limit, which has now been increased to roughly 155,350 miles, the imperial equivalent of 250,000 km. This higher mileage cap is quite significant for fleet and salary sacrifice drivers, where vehicles can accumulate mileage far more quickly than typical private-use cars.

BYD says the revised warranty terms directly address common concerns around long‑term battery durability and predictable running costs. A more comprehensive battery warranty can also help support residual values by strengthening the ownership proposition for second and third owners, who often place significant weight on remaining battery cover.

One of the most significant elements of the update is that the improved battery warranty applies retrospectively. As a result, the eight‑year or 250,000 km coverage is extended beyond new deliveries to BYD vehicles already on the road, giving existing owners added protection without requiring any action on their part.

BYD’s press office has confirmed that the change was formally communicated at the launch of the Atto 2 DM-i in November, rather than through a standalone announcement at the time. The revised figure looks unusual in miles but is the 250,000 km equivalent.

Rob Van Weyenbergh, Head of Aftersales at BYD Belux, said the aim is to give customers increased confidence in the long-term ownership proposition, particularly for professional users who do a lot of miles. He added that a strong battery warranty helps underline BYD’s battery technology credentials while also supporting mobility and investment security for owners.

BYD also highlights that the revised mileage limit exceeds what it describes as a typical market benchmark of around eight years and 150,000 km or 93,000 miles for high-voltage batteries in EV and PHEV models. For business users, that additional mileage headroom could make a meaningful difference over a typical fleet lifecycle, particularly in roles involving heavier annual use.

The extended battery warranty sits within a wider warranty package across BYD’s range, which BYD summarises as follows: a general vehicle warranty of six years or 150,000 km, powertrain cover up to eight years or 150,000 km, and a 12-year bodywork warranty against rusting from the inside, with no mileage limit.
