Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced a package of updates

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced a package of enhancements for the e‑Transporter and e‑Caravelle, designed to make day‑to‑day operation easier for fleets moving towards lower‑carbon vehicles. The updates centre on a higher‑capacity battery, quicker rapid charging and the introduction of a smart all‑wheel‑drive system.

 

Range improves thanks to a new 70 kWh battery, up from 64 kWh previously. Volkswagen says this lifts the maximum range to up to 236 miles, which it describes as a 13% increase. For fleets, that extra headroom can reduce mid-shift charging stops, widen route flexibility, and make it easier to cover mixed urban and motorway work without having to plan around short-range limitations. 

Charging performance has also been improved. The new battery supports DC rapid charging at up to 125 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in around 30 minutes, which Volkswagen says is roughly 10 minutes quicker than before. Put another way, a short 10‑minute top‑up can add around 60 miles of range. For businesses, this is significant as it reduces downtime, increases vehicle utilisation and makes it easier to integrate public charging into driver break periods.

 

The third change is the option of an intelligent 4Motion all-wheel drive system, available from the start of this year. The system retains the rear electric drive unit but adds a second motor on the front axle, with the two axles not mechanically linked. Volkswagen positions this as a traction and stability benefit for operators who face low-grip conditions, such as wet roads, rural routes or construction sites, and for drivers who need additional confidence when surfaces change quickly. 

Volkswagen says the 4Motion system works closely with the vehicle’s electronic stability and traction control functions, allowing torque distribution and braking intervention to be used in a targeted way to maintain grip and support stability when cornering or when conditions deteriorate. The system will be offered across three output levels: 100 kW (136 PS), 160 kW (218 PS) and 210 kW (286 PS). 

Taken together, the changes are intended to make the electric Transporter platform easier to run in day-to-day commercial use, with more usable range, quicker charging stops and a clear traction upgrade for operators who need it.
