Alfa Romeo's compact Junior Elettrica small EV hatch gets a shot of power and purpose in this top 280 Veloce shopping rocket model. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.

Ten Second Review

The Junior Elettrica Veloce 280 is Alfa Romeo's entry in the growing segment for compact hot hatch EVs. It's a top variant that aims to bring some much-needed Alfa credibility to the Milanese maker's volume-selling small hatch.

Background

Right at present, Alfa Romeo is a brand pretty much built around one model; the Junior. The marque does still sell other cars of course - the Giulietta, the Stelvio and, for wealthy billionaire collectors, the 33 Stradale supercar. But without the Junior compact Hybrid and EV hatch, it would effectively cease to exist. Which is an issue for brand enthusiasts given that the modestly-powered Junior is very much designed for Surbiton rather than Silverstone. Given that Alfa has an enthusiast brand image to maintain, the 33 Stradale engineering team were dispatched to create Junior variant more in keeping with this Milanese maker's driver-orientated traditions and this is it, the Junior Elettrica 280 Veloce. It's an EV, but with virtually double the power of the standard Elettrica model, via a drivetrain also used elsewhere across Stellantis Group brands in cars like the Abarth 600e, the Peugeot E-208 GTi and the Vauxhall Mokka GSe. So has it been tuned in this case to make this car feel properly Alfa? Let's see.

Driving Experience

The 276bhp electric motor of this Veloce model is very different from the 154bhp unit used by other full-electric Juniors. There is only one front-mounted motor for the Veloce - a point worth making because for the kind of money being asked here, you might reasonably expect the kind of much more powerful twin motor AWD set-up offered by a number of notable rivals (think Skoda Elroq vRS or smart #1 BRABUS or, more cheaply, the MG4 XPOWER). But perhaps you don't really need to reach 62mph in your EV hot hatch any faster than the Veloce's 5.9s time. That's if you're in the most urgent of the drive modes - Dynamic, which releases the maximum 345Nm of torque. Top speed is 124mph, 31mph faster than an ordinary Junior Elettrica. Those who know their driving will also know that it's not how fast you can go in this kind of car but how much you're likely to enjoy yourself doing it. Well, this Alfa has been engineered to score here. For a start, it's one of the lightest cars in the segment, the 1,560kg kerb weight being, for instance, 240kg lighter than a rival CUPRA Born VZ. And the cornering traction you might think might be missing due to the lack of a dual motor set-up is amply supplied (in dry conditions at least) by wider 225-section Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres and the kind of limited-slip differential that a lot of rivals do without. There's also a 25mm-lowered ride height, a thicker anti-roll bar, beefier brakes (380mm discs with four-pot calipers) and a retuned steering set-up with a quick 2.6-turns lock-to-lock. Range from the 54kWh battery is a bit disappointing though, rated just 207 miles, a figure you could easily half if you start really enjoying herself. As you very well might in this car.

Design and Build

Visually with the Veloce, not too much changes over the mid-level 'Speciale' and 'Intensa' Elettrica models, but if you know the Junior, you'll spot the upgrades immediately. It's 25mm drop in ride height, an increase in wheel size and the change in suspension geometry all combine to deliver a more aggressive visual vibe, with big 'telephone dial'-style alloys shod with wider 225-section Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres. There's the usual instantly identifiable Junior frontage with its trademark Scudetto grille, slim aggressive headlights and full-width lower intake. Inside, there aren't too many changes for the Veloce unless you tick some expensive options boxes. Do that and you get a pair of race-style Sabelt sports seats trimmed in alcantara, which lift the cabin ambience up a good few notches. Otherwise, it's the usual Junior set-up, with a distinctive twin-binnacle cowling for the digital instrument display. That's very Alfa-like, which makes up for the fact that the 10.25-inch central screen comes straight from the Stellantis parts bin. One of the drawbacks of the compact platform this car sits on is restricted rear seat room; adults will be OK for short trips, but longer journeys won't be looked forward to. Out back, there's a reasonably-sized 400-litre boot. And there's also a small space beneath the bonnet for the charging leads.

Market and Model

There's quite a bit more to pay to get this uprated 280hp drivetrain in a Junior EV. At the time of this test in mid-2026, Alfa was wanting £40,800 for an Elettrica 280 Veloce, once its own £1,500 EV grant had been deducted. That's before you start adding options to it, as you'll almost certainly want to do. The ordinary Elettrica models sit in the £32,400-£37,600 bracket after Alfa grant deduction. Console yourself with a look at the Veloce version's standard spec list, which includes big 20-inch 'Venti' alloy wheels shod with performance tyres and featuring red front brake calipers. There's also a black roof with dark-tinted rear windows and a sports styling kit. Inside, you get heated front seats with power adjustment and massage, sports pedals, a leather steering wheel and a cargo flex kit. You're probably going to want to find an extra £2,800 for the optional 'Sport Pack', which adds race-style alcantara-trimmed Sabelt front seats and a 'Perfo' alcantara-trimmed steering wheel. The basic camera safety features are standard. But you'll need another £2,200 for the 'Technology Pack', which amongst other things adds LED Matrix headlights, a powered tailgate, a wireless smartphone charger, power-folding mirrors, keyless entry and Adaptive Cruise Control with lane centering and traffic jam assist.

Cost of Ownership

We gave you the driving range figure from the 54kWh battery (51kWh usable) in our driving section - just 207 miles, 48 miles less than an ordinary Junior Elettrica. The maximum DC charging speed of only 100kW isn't very impressive either; the cell pack can recharge from 10-80% in 27 minutes. About 3 minutes on a DC fast charger would add 80 miles of range and 24 minutes could get the battery from 20 to 80%. With an ordinary single-phase 7.4kW home AC wallbox, a full charge would take 8 hours 15 minutes. If you can three-phase charge at up to 11kW, you can reduce that to 5 hours 45 minutes. As with other Alfas, depreciation values will be aided by this model's 'NFT' (or 'Non-Fungible Token') technology, which backs up the car's service history (stuff like maintenance records and battery pack condition) in a cloud, out of the vehicle. This means that no one should touch your car without it showing on the NFT record. Alfas claims that this makes it much harder to forge the vehicle's records, which in turn ought to preserve residuals. Unfortunately though, the standard warranty offering remains the usual unremarkable three year / 60,000 mile package. There's a separate eight year / 93,000 mile battery warranty. Insurance is group 34E.

Summary

Of all the models using the updated EV drivetrain for compact Stellantis hot hatches, this Junior 280 Veloce is the most engaging. But it's also the most expensive - by some margin once you add in all the extras. Still, you might be prepared to pay the necessary premium in return for the way that Alfa has finessed the various performance ingredients of this car together in a more driver-focused way. To pay the necessary price though, you'd have to be someone for whom ultimate speed and traction aren't everything. For this kind of money, you can after all, get twin motor AWD traction and lots more power. It's possible though that after trying a Junior Veloce, you might not want that. If so, you'll be a rare kind of customer. But this is a rare kind of Alfa. And a welcome one.
